U.S. scientists have developed an artificial leaf that could supply households with electricity. of Technology presented the artificial leaf at the Conference of the American
Chemical Society and explained that the sun’s energy converts water molecules
into hydrogen and oxygen. Hydrogen
is then stored in a fuel cell and is used for producing electricity.

 

Man-made leaf is composed of silicon,
necessary electronics and catalysts – metal compounds that accelerate the
desired chemical reaction. It is enough
to place it
into a container with water and leave it on the sun in order
to begin producing the energy needed for an average household in developing
countries. Fuel cells have the
ability to store the energy for its usage during cloudy days.

 

Catalysts consisting of nickel and cobalt are
relatively cheap materials. American
scientist John Turner has developed a similar principle ten years ago; however
his catalyst consisted of expensive platinum.


 

Nocera argues that his leaf can produce energy
for at least 45 hours without stopping and is ten times more effective than the
natural rate. The conference
noted that the invention is primarily intended for developing countries in
which each household can produce their own power.
