The European Commission has given France the go ahead to award an €11 million grant to a biomass project.
The project will see a 43 MW biomass boiler constructed on an industrial site operated by Roquette Frères in Beinheim. The plant will partly replace current gas boiler capacity (totalling 76 MW) and reduce CO2 emissions by 75,000 tons a year.
“The Beinheim biomass project will contribute to reaching the EU 2020 environmental objectives without unduly distorting competition,â€Â commented competition vice-president JoaquÃn Almunia.
The proponents of the scheme believe it will also help encourage the use of biomass technology at the commercial scale.
