After nearly two years of preparation the Electric Power BiH (EPBiH) is ready to implement the first two CDM project whose value is estimated at around 40 million KM.

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) provides means for developed countries to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through investments in clean energy projects in developing countries. Under the international Kyoto Protocol, industrialized countries committed themselves to reducing greenhouse gases and it is usually performed by trading Certified Emission Reduction credits (CER) on the foreign stock exchange.

EPBiH is ready for the first issue of the CER’s to be traded in its name by the British agents Trade Greener. As disclosed, EPBiH tender offers three packages – the first CDM projects related to the revitalization of the UNIT 6 in Tuzla, the second to revitalize UNITS 6 in Kakanj a third on the project cogeneration of coal and biomass in Kakanj Thermal Power Plant. The strictest environmental standards for the realization of all three projects will be applied to, which will qualify for the worth of 40 million KM of CER’s.

CDM’s are actually a kind of “environmental taxes” which the greatest polluters of the planet must pay.

EPBiH is the first in BiH who recognized the market potential of CDM. Two years ago, EPBiH made a study “The Possibility of Implementing CDM Projects” in which the mechanisms and potential market valuation of environmentally friendly energy projects in power plants of BiH were elaborated in  details. Of course, the potentials are several times higher than the value of the first stock show’s CDM and measured hundreds of millions KM.
