Delegation of the City of Sarajevo participated in the Covenant of Mayors ceremony

Delegation of the City of Sarajevo, led by Mayor Alija Behmen, participated in the ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors held in Brussels. The host of this ceremony was the European Parliament and CoR. The ceremony took place in the presence of mayors of cities that have joined the initiative, and coordinator of the Agreement, its supporters

Delegation of the City of Sarajevo, led by Mayor Alija Behmen, participated in the ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors held in Brussels. The host of this ceremony was the European Parliament and CoR.

The ceremony took place in the presence of mayors of cities that have joined the initiative, and coordinator of the Agreement, its supporters and senior representatives of European institutions. Covenant of Mayors is one of the main instruments of European energy policy, which brings together mayors from more than 3,000 cities in the European Union and beyond. Protocol signatories are united in an effort to meet and exceed the ambitious energy and climate objectives of the EU, in order to create better living conditions for European citizens.

In the frameworks of the ceremony, the mayor of Sarajevo – Alija Behmen, participated in a panel discussion on the topic “The City as a center of initiative”.

In his address, Mayor Behmen said that increased emissions of greenhouse gases, global warming and climate change is an unavoidable issue throughout the world and a dangerous threat to many aspects of development and life on Earth.

“The City of Sarajevo is committed in its attempt to justify the role of capital as drivers of initiatives and policies. We want to raise the environmental awareness of employees of city governments and citizens, encourage economic development and communicate with each other, be the true support of the European Commission and the Office of the Mayor of the agreement in Brussels and to provide direct professional and technical support to our cities and municipalities in the region where there is political will for accession to the Agreement Mayor, the preparation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan and implementation of its activities in order to protect our valuable natural resources”, said Behmen.

The mayor said that “by establishing a club of the Covenant of Mayors, the major cities in Southeast Europe (Zagreb, April 6, 2011), we want to emphasize strong strategic orientation and the primary policy objectives of responsible city administration to implement programs to create a network of energy efficient cities, optimizing the organizational structure of the urban energy planning, sustainable energy management, quality and safe energy supply of the city, the rationalization of energy consumption in all sectors of renewable energy and environmentally friendly fuels, new information and energy-efficient green technologies.”
