The Austrian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) organized yesterday in Sarajevo World Environment Day, which is celebrated to raise funds for the reconstruction of kindergartens in Maglaj – flooded city in May.

The Austrian Ambassador to BiH Martin Pammer explained to FENA that yesterday’s celebration is not a typical reception for the diplomatic corps and other important guests, but this event has turned into a campaign to raise funds for the flood-affected areas.

– That’s why we offer the guests to buy photos of famous BH photographers, and proceeds from the sale of these photos will be redirected to charitable purposes – said Pammer.

Also, yesterday’s event was celebrated by pointing out the importance of the environment and the presentation of the good cooperation on a bilateral and multilateral basis in terms of connecting countries in important programs of the United Nations.

– We decided that this humanitarian action is a support project that is of great interest because in this way we want to emphasize the importance of transparency in the provision of aid and that it be addressed wherever it is intended – said Pammer.

The representative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in BiH Omiæeviæ Amina said in a statement to FENA that second year in a row UNEP together with the Austrian Embassy in Bosnia and Herzegovina
and the SOS Children’s Villages in Bosnia and Herzegovina are organizing and celebrating the World Environment Day.

– This year, due to a natural disaster that has befallen the BiH, instead of a celebration we organized a charity event.
Therefore, the reception guests are invited to deliver a donation to SOS Children’s Village and to purchase photos exposed to the entire amount was spent for the reconstruction of kindergartens in Maglaj – stressed Omicevic.

Omicevic said that the participants presented the results of climate change that caused the latest developments in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and they commented on the natural disasters caused by climate change in the European Union.

World Environment Day is celebrated every year on June 5, to mark the anniversary of the United Nations Conference in Stockholm (1972). This day is dedicated to the environment, and on this day all over the world, we are trying to highlight the main environmental issues and encourage people to responsible behavior towards the environment.

The reception was attended by representatives of the diplomatic corps in BiH, international organizations and representatives of the NGO sector dealing with the protection of the environment in BiH.
