Latest SolarPlaza analysis shows that Italy could assume a leading position from Germany in the solar photovoltaic (PV) market.

In the first half of 2010 the Italian PV market share was nearly three times larger than in Germany, according to SolarPlaza Italy could become the leading country in 2011 with new installations.

In 2010, Germany installed new capacity of 8 GW and was the leading the solar PV market, making even half of the total world market. However, Italy in 2011 was able to assume leadership from Germany.

Until now, Germany has reduced its subsidies by 13% and the market is reduced by as much as 40% over the same period last year. Germany is still the leader when it comes to a total capacity of PV systems, but SolarPlaza predicts that countries like Italy could take the leadership position.

There are other changes among the top ten countries in the PV market, including the Czech Republic, due to the significant reduction initiatives it is no longer on the list, and it is expected that Japan could have a significant growth due to its focus on the PV market after the nuclear disaster in Fukushima.

During the last three years, prices of solar PV systems have fallen by about 60% therefore solar energy could be competitive in sunny countries such as India, USA, Middle East and China.

India has launched a National Solar Mission program, and China recently announced and introduced a green incentive program.

Also, there are several new markets in development such as the Philippines, Israel, Canada and South Africa.
