Electronics manufacturer LG is promising to make demand-response technology a major feature of its new generation of smart appliances.

Speaking at the International Consumer
Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas earlier this week, president and chief
technology officer of LG Electronics Skott Ahn said: “For LG, 2011 is going to
be all about smart products, including smart TVs, smart phones, and smart
appliances… It’s no longer enough just to offer static services.”

LG’s range of smart appliances uses the
company’s new THINQ™ technology, which allows users to set their operation
according to personal preferences and control or monitor them via smartphones
or tablet PCs.

When used with smart grid technology, LG’s
THINQ-enabled washing machine, for example, can select the most cost-effective
program or the time when electricity rates are lowest.

Ovens, meanwhile, offer low, medium and high
cost options that take into account cooking temperatures and electricity costs.
And THINQ-enabled fridges even keep count of how often users open the door to
encourage them to save energy.

All the smart appliances display daily,
weekly or monthly reports of energy consumption and electricity costs, which
can be relayed to smartphones or tablet PCs, to help homeowners improve their
energy efficiency.

LG is also working on smart grid projects
around the world, including a residential energy storage system with Southern
California Edison (SCE), a real-time energy pricing project in Germany and a
pilot project in South Korea.
