Rest of criteria applied for selection of cities for this Initiative were focusing on availability of data, and that is main low point of Bosnian cities.

Smart Cities Initiative supports cities in achieving ambitious goal: 40% reduction of greenhouse gasses emission by year 2020. In order of achieving this, it is necessary to systematically approach to the issue and tackle it with number of innovations in energy efficiency, low-carbon technology, and smart grid fields.

This Initiative is developed based on existing EU and national sustainable development programs such as CIVITAS; CONCERTO and Intelligent Energy Europe, and it uses guidelines of Strategic Energy Technology Plan. In initial phase of Initiative implementation, Covenant of Mayors will be involved in order to multiply effect of the Initiative.

Specific goals

  • To reach initial level of 5% of total EU population
  • Reduce emission of greenhouse gasses to 40% of 1990 emissions by year 2020
  • Showcase of sustainable living concept on local level

To accomplish mentioned goals, local government must implement holistic concept, and integrate appropriate technologies and legal framework. As mentioned this initiative is focused on buildings, energy grids and transportation.

Smart City
– Amsterdam

Local government of Amsterdam in cooperation with IBM, Cisco, Phillips and local energy companies decided to invest around 1 billion Euros in next three years to make Amsterdam leading European city under Smart Cities Indicatiors. Although Amsterdam is not member of Smart Cities Initiative, city authorities decided to follow Smart Cities standards, and to implement them in record time. Key partners in this project are determined to invent best possible solutions and to apply them in Amsterdam. Whole idea is to make Amsterdam model city for energy efficiency, reduction of greenhouse gasses emission and sustainable development, by usage of on-the-edge technologies.
