Street lighting with its own power supply came to Barcelona. Lampposts with solar panels and wind turbines are part of the city projects which aims to energy self-sufficiency.

The beach in Barcelona takes on a new, more modern look. Every lamppost of street lighting should get two solar panels, a wind turbine and battery for energy storage. The result is ten hours of light during the night from completely environmentally friendly sources.

“Compared to traditional systems of street lighting, those lights emit two tones less carbon dioxide per year then lights based on sodium or mercury which are used in traditional street lighting”, explains Pedro Montes, director of research and development in company Eolgreen.

From this company claim that these bulbs are 20 percent cheaper to maintain compared to traditional bulbs, because they work based on LED technology and they are independent from electricity grid.

Wind (breeze) energy

While LED lights with solar power are not something new on this market, the second system which is used on lampposts is. With photovoltaic cells system also uses a mini wind turbine which can be driven with light wind (breeze).

“This was a big challenge for us. Wind generators generally need strong wind to rotate between 1,500 and 3,000 rpm. We needed generators that can operate on only 10 rpm. With addition to this wind generators are more efficient in stronger wind, so we had to make completely reverse design”, explains the researcher from the University UPC Ramon Bargallo.

City of Barcelona plans to light up entire city with this system. It is the part of their strategy on energy self-sufficiency and they want to achieve it in next 40 years. First six lampposts are set and by the end of the year there should be 700 of them. City administration hopes that their project will inspire other cities in Spain to follow their path.
