The world’s first hydrogen power plant that will supply electricity to more than 20,000 families was put into operation in Fusina, near Venice. Fusina was chosen because of its proximity to the coal powered power plant and the petrochemical complex in Marghera, from where the raw materials are taken from, that is hydrogen.

The hydrogen powerplant has an insatlled capacity of 16 MW and is based on a combined cycle, where hydrogen is used as fuel. The plant does not emit CO2, however, it only uses minimal amounts of nitrogen oxides. Through the gas turbine, thermal energy is converted to electrical power and has an output of 12 MW. Additional  4 MW of power is obtained by using the exhaust gases from existing coal powered thermal power plant.

More than 50 million Euros has been invested into the construction of the facilities. The hydrogen plant will produce 60 million KW per year, which can power more than 20,000 households. To obtain raw materials the power plant will use around 70,000 tonnes of waste produced by 300,000 resident within the city. Instead of coal, however, in the nearby power plant 60,000 tons of CO2 per year will be emitted into the atmosphere.

”This is a technological pearl, unique in the world. True, this technology is five times more expensive than the one that uses a normal drive, but we must continue to invest into research”, said the CEO of Enel Fulvio Conti – the energy company, who along with Governor of the region Veneto Luc and the Venice Mayor Giorgio Orsoni have officially placed the hydrogen power plant into drive.
