The foundation stone for the construction of the first solar power plant in Serbia with the total installed capacity of five megawatts (MW) and the value of 15 million Euros was laid today in the city of Zlatibor.
The beginning of the construction of the solar powerÂ plant was symbolically made by official CEOs of “Dunav Insurance” andÂ the Electric Power Industry of Serbia (EPS) Milenka Jezdimirovic and DragomirÂ Markovic, as well as the Mayor of the Municipality of Ãˆajetina Milan Stamatovic.
The solar power plant will be built on six kilometersÂ from the center of Zlatibor, on the way to Montenegro, on the SmiljaniÃ¦a hill.Â The plant will be jointly built by “Dunav Insurance” and EPS, whereÂ the expected completion of the first phase of a MW is expected in spring ofÂ 2012, and the whole project should be completed in the next few years.
The company “Dunav insurance” which is theÂ main investor of the first solar power plant, will invest one million Euros inÂ the first phase of the construction of that facility. The location and allÂ necessary permission were provided by the municipality of Cajetina.
Director Markovic said that the use of renewable energyÂ a top priority for EPS. According to Markovic, EPS has to change its productionÂ structure, which is currently based on coal, a sees a chance in hydropower andÂ renewable energy.
“This is one of the first projects, and anotherÂ major investment will be in hydropower plants, which are secured by assets of Â 5 million Euros by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. InÂ the autumn, we expect work to begin on the first wind park in the area of Kostolac”,Â said Markovic.
Markovic said that the planned implementation ofÂ projects for large hydropower plants on the Morava, Ibar, Drina and DanubeÂ Rivers. Director JezdimiroviÃ¦ said that the first solar power plant, aÂ pioneering venture in which they engaged local resources, knowledge andÂ infrastructure.
Jezdimirovic said that “Dunav insurance”Â recognized the right opportunity in a new way to invest its capital with a
strategic partner. This kind of investment, according to JezdimiroviÃ¦, willÂ provide the revenue budget, improve economic development, create jobs and haveÂ a positive impact on nature conservation and the environment in Serbia.
The Mayor StamatoviÃ¦ said that Zlatibor is suitable forÂ the construction of solar power, because it has 250 sunny days during the year.
