According to the report of the European Commission, European energy consumers can expect electricity prices to rise for at least another 20 years. This will contribute to increasing the number of wind turbines.

In fact, everything points to the fact that wind power will become the largest source of electricity in the EU by 2050, more significant than coal and nuclear energy. Wind farms could provide up to 49 percent of the electricity of the European Union by then, suggests the report, as only five percent today.

Under all scenarios, the average electricity prices for households and businesses will grow strongly until 2020 and 2030, the report said. Prices will be the highest after 2030 when renewable energy sources will have higher impact, like wind and solar energy, had a large share of energy production. The EU in 2050 should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80 percent compared to levels in 1990.

More than half of the electricity in the EU is produced from conventional fossil fuels such as coal and gas. Nuclear power plants are the next largest source of energy with a share of 28 percent, wind and hydroelectric power, the two largest renewable sources, together providing 18 percent energy.

The European Commission will publish a document entitled Energy Plan in 2050 by the end of the year.
