Better comfort and positive environmental impact

So far Center for Education and Raising Awareness of Energy Efficiency – Energis highlighted importance of insulation as one of basic measures of energy efficiency. Windows and doors represent crucial part of insulation, and they can be used as
temperature regulators – therefore having direct impact on energy bills.

Outdated or badly installed windows can increase energy consumption up to 57%, as shown in our analysis of energy consumption in 4 of the most energy demanding months. This analysis is based on an average household that primarily uses natural gas as heating source, and it is important to mention that besides windows there was no other reconstruction done to improve insulation of house. New windows are six-chambered PVC windows with double-layered glass, and old ones were
wooden frame windows with single-layer glass.

Total energy savings in above mentioned period are amounting to 268 KM, total investment in window replacement is 2.200 KM. This can be basis for calculating payback period, and applying basic calculation we can see that payback period of this
investment is 8,2 years. But in calculation we have to involve other factors as continuous rise of fossil fuel prices, the fact that heating season last until April, and that better insulation helps to reduce cooling costs in summer. Having in mind all factors we estimate that payback period of such investment is anywhere between 5 and 7 years. PVC windows have same lifetime as houses so this investment from that point is more than beneficial.

We have to point out other benefits of such investment. PVC windows with double-layered glass can reduce environmental noise up to 35 dB, providing better comfort for household members. Lowering gas consumption means lowering CO2 emissions, which is of the most importance for sustainable future of the Earth. Although, natural gas is considered to be relatively clean energy source, each reduction of emissions is more than welcome, also this reduces dependence of fossil fuels and increases energy security of the household.
