Delegation of the City of Sarajevo, led by Mayor Alija Behmen, participated in the ceremony of the Covenant of Mayors held in Brussels. The host of this ceremony was the European Parliament and CoR.
The ceremony took place inÂ the presence of mayors of cities that have joined the initiative, andÂ coordinator of the Agreement, its supporters and senior representatives ofÂ European institutions. Covenant of Mayors is one of the main instruments ofÂ European energy policy, which brings together mayors from more than 3,000Â cities in the European Union and beyond. Protocol signatories are united in anÂ effort to meet and exceed the ambitious energy and climate objectives of theÂ EU, in order to create better living conditions for European citizens.
In the frameworks of theÂ ceremony, the mayor of Sarajevo – Alija Behmen, participated in a panelÂ discussion on the topic “The City as a center of initiative”.
In his address, Mayor BehmenÂ said that increased emissions of greenhouse gases, global warming and climateÂ change is an unavoidable issue throughout the world and a dangerous threat toÂ many aspects of development and life on Earth.
“The City of SarajevoÂ is committed in its attempt to justify the role of capital as drivers ofÂ initiatives and policies. We want to raise the environmental awareness ofÂ employees of city governments and citizens, encourage economic development andÂ communicate with each other, be the true support of the European Commission andÂ the Office of the Mayor of the agreement in Brussels and to provide directÂ professional and technical support to our cities and municipalities in theÂ region where there is political will for accession to the Agreement Mayor, theÂ preparation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan and implementation of itsÂ activities in order to protect our valuable natural resources”, saidÂ Behmen.
The mayor said that “by establishing a club of the Covenant of Mayors,Â the major cities in Southeast Europe (Zagreb, April 6, 2011), we want toÂ emphasize strong strategic orientation and the primary policy objectives ofÂ responsible city administration to implement programs to create a network ofÂ energy efficient cities, optimizing the organizational structure of the urbanÂ energy planning, sustainable energy management, quality and safe energy supplyÂ of the city, the rationalization of energy consumption in all sectors of renewableÂ energy and environmentally friendly fuels, new information and energy-efficientÂ green technologies.”
