The project typologies of residential buildings is the first classification of buildings in BiH related to energy efficiency and covers the entire housing stock of Bosnia and Herzegovina, houses and buildings of collective housing. The project was presented on Friday, November 18, at the Faculty of Architecture in Sarajevo. One of the data from the project is that in BiH annually consumes 60-70% more heat than it should.
“The typology of apartment buildings in BiH” is one of the most important research on the topic of energy efficiency and fund residential buildings. This database contains information on the energy characteristics of the models of possible improvements for the entire stock of residential buildings BiH, completed with the support of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ).

Detailed analysis of housing stock in the country, its classification, the current state of energy performance in 29 different representative types of building and rehabilitation models in two levels for each type will be soon presented to the public in Sarajevo and Banja Luka.
– The advantage of the typology is what allows you to determine the statistical method, regardless of how the group you are trying to establish a typology, which are the most typical concrete building. As this energy efficiency project, we did everything in order to determine what the situation is in typical buildings in terms of energy efficiency, how much each building consumes energy and to determine how much potential for energy savings in typical buildings individually, to be determined how much energy can be saved in one building, and the standard of the profession approved and proven energy efficiency measures as well as advanced measures for each building – said Esad Smajlovic, a representative of GIZ.
The typology of residential buildings Bosnia and Herzegovina will be available for download and use on Android and iOS platforms.
As he told Esad Smajlovic, GIZ has prepared the book “The typology of residential buildings” in which the given section of 29 concrete buildings with their addresses best and most representative of the total housing stock in the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The buildings are divided by periods of construction and types of buildings, but most were built before 1992.
– Two criteria have been key in this study: to investigate and properly cover the urban and rural zones and both entities. Statistical methods have reduced many buildings to smaller and determine, according to clearly defined criteria, which is that 29 buildings most typical. We have a matrix consisting of vintage construction of these buildings as well as planning and technical conditions that buildings meet. In these 29 buildings are covered by individual building, building in a row, building collective housing, apartment blocks-depth and high-rise buildings – said Smajlovic.
Once buildings are identified, made the energy audit on each particular building, which is working to determine the current status in terms of energy consumption and energy saving potentials compared to standard optimal and advanced measures for each building.
He added that based on a database of buildings estimated that the total number of buildings in BiH for each typical building, covering the entire housing stock, and by multiplying the energy consumption and potential energy savings come about how much energy is used in both entities and what are the total potential for energy savings again compared to standard and advanced energy efficiency measures.
Canton is currently worming up two to three buildings per year, and since the canton of more than 1,800 buildings that is not a good trend. This means that in 70 years all the building just in the area of a municipality to be drowned.
In buildings of collective housing, investment per family for the warmth of the building was five times lower than in individual homes.
– At the state level a year consumes 200 mW / h of heat, and if we apply the first set of energy efficiency measures to save 60%. The application depends on whether we are as a society to organize and undertake energy efficiency projects and work on energy saving. Individually, as it now takes place, will not be achieved for 70 years. Citizens and politicians must be informed. This is something that would be worth it in the long run – said Nijaz Delalic, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, University of Sarajevo.
